A number of economic practices and social issues are exacerbating our forest fire problems. One of the obvious issues is the expanding wildland-urban interface. This article also looks at the fact that the federal government picks up 1/2 - 2/3 of the cost of protecting people and property in the WUI - people who continue to ignore their responsibility for reducing hazardous fuels on their property. The article suggests that the US taxpayer should not be subsidizing and underwriting such risky behavior. Very interesting read. Click here.
