Utah's New Legislative Efforts for Mitigation and Suppression

Governor Gary Herbert
On May 12, 2015 Utah Governor Gary Herbert signed SB 56 into law adopting the goals of the Cohesive Strategy and setting into motion the wheels for a more robust suppression, mitigation and prevention strategy for the state.

The amended Wildland Fire Policy now includes specific language that allows the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands to promote wildfire preparedness, wildfire mitigation, and wildfire prevention in addition to its other duties. The legislation also spells out the goals of the state-wide catastrophic wildfire reduction policy: restore and maintain landscapes; create fire adapted communities and improve wildfire response.....sound familiar!  The bill also outlines that the State shall coordinate with counties, cities, towns and any other stakeholders in the development of the policy.  A fantastic example of making headway towards the three goals of the Cohesive Strategy from a legislative angle.  Read the full text of the amendment here.
