Mark Finney, Ph.D., a research forester with the U.S. Forest Service Fire Lab in Missoula says prescribed fire is “... not risk-free, but by doing nothing you’re ignoring the potential. Which risk would we prefer?”
Dr. Finney participated in a two-night lecture series (June 10 & 11) called “Fire on the Landscape,” sponsored by the Helena National Forest, Montana Discovery Foundation, Helena Fire Department and Tri-County Fire Safe Working Group (great partnership!).
The first night's discussion is summarized here. The second evening of the “Fire on the Landscape” lecture series offered a possible glimpse into the future, see next article here.
And, this article sizes up the western situation well and calls out the need for fire on the landscape to make effective change and reduce wildfire risk.
