The Plumas National Forest in California continues to partner with Portola High School to offer wildland firefighter education to students that culminates in being part of an on-call crew to help fight fire during the summer.  They receive firefighter training and learn all about prescribed fire, maps and compasses, tree species identification, logging, milling and the weather.  Kids get education and career opportunity and The Plumas gets a workforce.  More here
