Using heat shield technology, NASA engineers are developing flexible thermal protection layers that can improve the convective ability of fire shelters. The Convective Heating Improvement for Emergency Fire Shelters (CHIEFS) project grew as a result of the deadly Yarnell Hill fire in 2013.
The goal is to offer better protection by slowing the transfer of heat through the shelter layers. Watch the short video above for this exciting, innovative approach.
