Air Force Academy Becomes First Military Firewise Community

The US Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO is the first military installation to earn recognition as a Firewise Communities/USA site. The Academy has completed the required criteria for the program for their base housing units so the property and members of the military and their families are safer from the threats of wildland fire.  
With a history of wildland fires disrupting training exercises and resulting in evacuations, the Academy has partnered with the US Air Force Natural Resources Department Fire and Emergency Services and US Fish and Wildlife to reduce hazardous fuels around homes and structures for more than a decade.
